The by-product of producing maize starch through wet milling is known as maize gluten meal. Corn gluten feed, which contains between 50 and 70% crude protein (CP), is used as a source of protein, energy and pigments for various animal species, including fish. It is also prized in pet foods thanks to its high protein digestibility. Corn gluten meal was also used as a fertiliser and weedkiller before it was developed.
Applications
Feed for poultry:
Because of its high protein, pigment (such as xanthophyll) and ME content, gluten-containing maize meal can be a valuable feed for poultry. The methionine content is quite high, much higher than that of soya meal and rather similar to that of fish meal, which is beneficial for layer diets. On the markets, corn gluten meal with a high xanthophyll content is of great value. The bright yellow of egg yolks, skin and adipose tissue is perceived as an indicator of health and superior quality by the customer. As a result, the percentage of corn gluten meal incorporated into poultry diets is partly influenced by market requirements for colour.
Pisces :
Corn gluten is considered a good source of protein and palatability for fish and has been used in fish feed.
